Ossett Town striker Calum Ward has thanked Glasshoughton Welfare manager Rob Hunter and assistant Mark Smitheringale for his time at Leeds Road, writes James Grayson.
Ward was deemed surplus to requirements at Tadcaster Albion in May and after offers from a few clubs, he chose Glasshoughton as his next move.
Ward went onto score 15 times in 17 appearances for Hunter’s men which attracted attention from higher-ranked teams.
He chose Craig Elliott’s Ossett and has appeared in their last three games and looking back at his spell with Glasshoughton, Ward told Sports Performer: “It was a hard decision for me because of Rob and Smudge.
“I have to thank Rob, Smudge and Glasshoughton for lot because at the start of the season I didn’t where I was going to be at. It was nice for Rob and Smudge to trust me and they trusted me by giving me penalties, free kicks and they always wanted me to score.
“I had a happy time there and I would go back. If it doesn’t work out here I’d go back. Glasshoughton would be the first club I would speak to.”
Ward now hopes to prove himself at Evo Stik Division One North level with Ossett and he added: “It took a while for me to make a decision, but once I spoke to Craig, I thought I had to test myself at the highest level possible. It wasn’t about the money.
“I still feel I have a point to prove to certain people and certain clubs and that’s what I want to do.
“I want to give my best and go the furthest I can. It is a big step-up. It is a faster game, but Craig has trusted me and hopefully I can repay with goals and performances.
“The first time I spoke to Craig was over the phone and straightaway he gave me confidence.”
