Scarborough Athletic rounded off a great week for the club by winning 2-1 at Cambridge City in the FA Trophy second qualifying round replay last night.
On Monday, Scarborough Council approved proposals for a new leisure centre and swimming pool alongside a football stadium for Athletic.
The scheme is still a long way from construction starting, but the Scarborough fans have finally been given some hope that their exile in Bridlington will come to an end.
Rudy Funk’s Scarborough team then beat Cambridge in difficult conditions.
Matty Plummer gave Scarborough the lead with ten minutes to go until half-time and former Birmingham City star Bryan Hughes doubled the advantage with a wonder goal in the second half.
Scarborough survived a scare within a couple of minutes of Hughes’ goal. Goalkeeper Joe Cracknell was deemed to have fouled Adam Marriott and a penalty was given.
Marriott then saved the spot kick and fortunately Marriott’s rebound attempt went wide. Referee Paul Evans then added more drama to the proceeding by awarding another penalty for handball. This time Marriott made no mistake.
Scarborough had to hold on and thanks to a couple of brilliant saves of Cracknell, Athletic managed to and they will play at AFC Telford United in the next round.
