Garforth Town officials are understood to be furious with referee Duncan Carratt and his assistants Matt Sowerby and Jason Payne for “a lack of courtesy” after the trio “sneaked out” of Wheatley Park.
Carratt was at the centre of controversy due to his starring role in the 5-3 Toolstation NCEL Premier Division defeat to Pickering.
The three officials decided to decline the complimentary food and drink after the game in the boardroom – away from the supporters’ bar – but failed to tell any official of Garforth of their decision and simply disappeared.
Catering manager Mairi Forman was “left twiddling her thumbs” on her own for over 20 minutes waiting for the referees to arrive before word got round that they had left the premises.
A volunteer was sent to see where the officials, only to find the referees’ dressing room deserted and their drinks vouchers lying in a heap.
Their food went wasted due to the no-show.
Garforth had six players cautioned in the match which will incur a fine – whether the cost of the wasted food is deducted from the fine remains to be seen.
Garforth came close to extinction last summer and currently live off a hand-to-mouth budget – helped massively by the presence of RIASA.
