Craig Elliott admitted that the referee made the correct decision by postponing Ossett Town’s Evo Stik Division One North clash with Kendal Town – ten minutes before the scheduled kick-off time.
Kendal had made the long trip to Ingfield and had arrived when the playing surface was fit for the game.
However, torrential rain soon put pay to the chances of the game starting and Elliott had no complaints.
“We were looking forward to it because I had a decent team out and any home game you fancy yourself to win as well,” he said.
“It is disappointing especially when you’re getting ready to play. To be fair, I don’t blame the referee.
“Because it was Kendal we had a pitch inspection at half past nine and the pitch was perfect and playable and it was 2pm.
“However, we had a massive downpour for about an hour. The ref wanted to give it as long as he could because Kendal had travelled so far and he even contemplated having a four or half past four kick off.
“When it got to three o’clock it was heavy and I think if we had left it all day it wouldn’t have been playable. There’s nothing the club could have done.
“The ref made the right call and you have to applaud him for trying to get it played. A lot of people would have called it off straight away but he gave it every chance.”
Elliott has been busy this week trying to fill the gaps left by recent well-publicised departures.
He has recruited a striker and he hopes more new faces will follow.
“I’ve got (former Yorkshire Amateur striker) Dempsey Smith signed on,” he said.
“He’s come back from injury and I’ve always liked him. It was disappointing he couldn’t play today.
“I’ve got a striker who I have agreed terms with for next week. Things are moving forward. As I said last week there are few clubs sniffing around a few players, but we’re taking it week by week.
“Hopefully things will settle down in the next few weeks, I can only hope that. I have been downhearted by losing a few players, but it is swings and roundabouts and you have to get on with it.”
Elliott did surprisingly lose young forward Calum Ward to promotion-chasing Tadcaster Albion on Thursday night – an exit that he did not want to happen.
Elliott added: “Losing Calum is a big blow.
“It was a few weeks ago when Taddy showed interest and he sort of pledged his future to us for the rest of the season. He then had a change of heart.
“Taddy are obviously making signings and showing the intention of getting out of the Counties so maybe the lure of that was too much for him.
“I didn’t want him to go and I’m disappointed. But what can you do, you move on – simple as that.”
