Caretaker manager Jon Miles believes the 1-0 win at Tadcaster Albion shows that Glasshoughton Welfare shows can be competitive in the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division under his leadership.
Glasshoughton bounced back from a 6-0 thrashing by title-chasing Barton Town Old Boys to record a memorable win at the league leaders on Saturday.
Miles is holding the Welfare fort for the rest of the season having replaced Rob Hunter and the club’s reserve team boss hopes to land the position on a permanent basis.
Asked about how the Tadcaster victory boosts his chances of being appointed as Hunter’s long term replacement, Miles said: “Wins can only be good.
“I’d like to think that we can another get another couple of wins before the end of the season and if we can put the Tadcaster performance in again then we can beat anybody.
“We certainly have a few winnable games and if we can pick up a few more points then I’d like to think that we will be given the chance.
“You have to think after losing 6-0 that the chance may have gone, but you hope that although it was 6-0, people take into consideration that players were missing.
“Our main centre-half Jimmy Williams was suspended and the other centre-half Adam Walsh went off after seven minutes and we had to play with two full-backs at centre-half.
“But, although it is not nice, in terms of Grimsby and Lincoln, I’m glad they took the spotlight off us because they showed at the tail end of the season freak results do happen.
“Last week was just a freak result. If you look at our results, we have only been beaten by the odd goals.
“We tried to pick everyone up after the Barton defeat and we had a few bodies back on Saturday.
“Tommy Carr, Jimmy Williams, Liam Tuck gave us some presence and physicality and they brought the best out of the other players like (Andy Seed) Seedy and Reece Chappell.
“We’ve said all along that if we can get the lads who we have signed out on the field we can compete with anybody. The problem is that because it is the end of the season, players can’t commit to every-week because of work situations.”
Glasshoughton visit Retford tomorrow night.
