Winning the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division title means the world to Brighouse Town captain Leon Henry.
Henry will lift the trophy tomorrow following Brighouse’s penultimate league game Bridlington Town at the Dual Seal Stadium – 48 hours after top spot was secured.
Henry sealed the championship and promotion to the Evo Stik Division One North by scoring the second goal in the 2-0 win over Retford United yesterday.
Henry told Sports Performer: “To be fair there was no pressure on us because we had three games to get three points.
“But today took a lot of pressure off us. I thought they gave us a real good game in the first half, but we came really strong in the second half.
“I don’t score many goals, but it was a relief to go round the ‘keeper and score.
“I was going to chip him, but I thought I would get told off so I thought I would play it safe.
“I’ve scored a few goals in my career, but that is right up there. I haven’t scored a goal as important and I haven’t won a league before.
“To me, the players, the management, backroom, to win the league means a lot. We’ve broken a lot of records and the main objective is now to get to 100 points.”
Winger Henry will get the chance to have a reunion with his former side Mossley next season and possibly Ossett Albion, if Richard Tracey’s men receive a dramatic reprieve.
But, whilst contemplating return trips, Henry reserved praise for his manager Paul Quinn.
He added: “Quinny as manager is quality.
“What he does is motivate the team and he doesn’t put too much pressure on us, he just tells us to go out and play our game.
“Quinny deserves a lot of credit for us winning the league. He has got us here today.”
