Jason Price was close to bringing down the curtain on his career until he joined Brighouse Town’s Toolstation NCEL Premier Division title challenge.
Former Doncaster Rovers and Swansea City striker Price, 37, was released by Shaw Lane Aquaforce after the appointment of Craig Elliott in February and he went without for a club for nearly a month.
Huddersfield-based Price, who began the season at Selby Town, contacted Brighouse on a social network site and was invited to a training session.
Manager Paul Quinn signed him on that night and Price played a role as Brighouse stormed to eight consecutive victories which won them the title on Saturday.
Price told Sports Performer: “I went to Selby (in September) and then to Aquaforce before I told to leave and I just thought I was going to give up.
“But, I messaged Brighouse on Twitter because I wanted to keep fit as I didn’t want to get fat.
“They then asked me to sign for them and I’m glad I did because it has given me some enthusiasm back for the game.
“I spoke to Quinny before the game on Saturday and he said I was something different and a breath of fresh air. That’s because I’m 6’ft and I win headers and know where to stand.
“If you had asked me six weeks ago what I was going to do next season then I would have said I was going to give up. But, I’ve got a new lease of life.”
Price would be interested in re-signing for Brighouse next season for their first ever campaign in the Evo Stik Division One North having been impressed with the club.
“There was only ten games left when I joined and they’ve won eight so it has been good,” he added.
“You don’t get many promotions in your career so the lads have to enjoy it.
“Since only one team goes up it is not a bad achievement.
“It is an excellent set-up, a brilliant squad so you can’t ask for more.
“They have proper defenders and the boys in midfield are rapid so there is a good mixture and when you have a mixture like that then you can go places, especially if they keep the same players for next season.”
