Wanting to build a team with local players earned Jon Miles the permanent reins at Glasshoughton Welfare, club chairman Phil Riding has said.
Miles was informed today that he and his assistant Mark Kellett had “unanimously” got the job after this week’s interviews.
Miles beat off competition from five “very good candidates” to land the vacancy that was created by Rob Hunter’s resignation in March.
The new Leeds Road chief was the club’s reserve team manager until he took temporary charge for the final 12 games of the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division season.
Miles won four of those matches including a sensational win at Tadcaster Albion with a side mostly made up of Castleford-based players and it was his recruitment plans secured him the job.
Riding told Sports Performer: “He spoke with passion about using local talent and the last time we did that, Craig Elliott was at the helm so that stuck in our minds.
“It was decided to go down that route again. We’re fully behind him.
“He was the reserve manager and he came in at a difficult time and probably over-achieved with what we had.
“We saw a glimpse of what we could have as his players played with passion and pride for the club and we want to build on that.”
Miles now has two months to get a team ready for the August 9th kick off of the NCEL Premier Division season.
Riding has always said that his managers are set a requirement of being competitive and that aim remains in place for Miles.
“We never set a manager a target as we don’t want to put a monkey on their back and put unnecessary pressure on them,” he added.
“What I do say to them is ‘let’s be competitive on the park on a Saturday and Tuesday and see where that takes us’.”
