Dominic Hackney had given Garforth a half-time lead, but Parkgate equalised through Scott Lowe’s penalty.
Mangham then intervened for Garforth.
Nicholas told Non League Yorkshire: “I’m absolutely delighted. It’s been seven years since the club won on the first day so we said it was important to get three points and start the season well.
“I always felt we were the better team. We were missing a couple of key players, but I trusted the players who were out there and they’ve done us proud.
“We were 1-0 up at half-time when Dominic Hackney capitalised on a mistake by the ‘keeper.
“We came out and changed things, but conceded a penalty because of a fairly rash tackle by Andy Hawksworth and we lost our shape.
“They came onto us for 20 minutes so we were on the back foot. We changed personnel and moved one or two players into advanced positions and it paid diviends as Luke Mangham scored two fantastic goals.”

“To be fair to Glasshoughton, they came and gave it go for 20 or 30 minutes. But, after that, I’m afraid it was one-way traffic.

“In the end a point was probably about right. They brought the game to us in the first half, but we didn’t help our cause by sitting deep and not engaging play higher up the field.
“(We made) a change in formation and personnel at half time and we looked the better side. Luke Thompson took his goal superbly, and there were note able performances from Shaun Gibson and Paul Morrill.
“Darren Rookes had some really good chances to win the game late on but it wasn’t meant to be.
“The target I set of not losing our first match was met, and it was for the players to manage this on the pitch.”
