Brian Davey is playing down Knaresborough Town’s promotion hopes after a brilliant start to the Toolstation NCEL Division One season.
Expectations have shot through the roof after two wins out of two in the league alongside a historic FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round victory at Glasshoughton Welfare last Saturday.
Davey told Non League Yorkshire: “In each interview I have done they have asked me: ‘can you win it?’”
“We have signed four or five good players, but we don’t know what the other teams are like.
“We are a better team than last year. We are playing better football with a better squad, better bench so we’re hoping to win more games and win more points than last year.
“I don’t want to say we’ll win it and then come fourth because people will say that we’ve had a poor season.
“For me, it’s every game at a time. I’m trying to keep everyone’s feet on the ground and like I’ve said since I came here, ‘let’s enjoy the football’.
“Years ago we were getting beat every-week, whereas now we are winning most weeks.
“People are enjoying it. We had a crowd of over 200 last week so everything is improving at the club on and off-the-pitch.”
Knaresborough host Dronfield Town tomorrow at Manse Lane and Davey added: “It’s been a good start.
“We have said all along that we have a good squad. I’m more than pleased with the whole squad because we are getting better and better.
“The squad is very strong so competition for places is strong.
“There were some good players in the squad at Glasshoughton, but, they know if they have a week off, they have to fight their way back into the side.”
