Paul Quinn says the visit of Scarborough Athletic on Bank Holiday Monday will bring back a lot of memories for Brighouse Town.
Brighouse travel to Clitheroe tomorrow before welcoming the Seadogs back to St Giles Road in the Evo Stik Division One North.
The meeting will be the first one since the two sides for the decisive NCEL Premier Division match in April 2013 when Scarborough won 2-0 – the victory effectively won Scarborough the title.
Over 1000 people crammed into Brighouse’s home to watch the game and Quinn says that despite the defeat, it remains a pivotal game for the club.
“I should imagine it will be a good occasion as they are coming back with fond memories and we’re thinking that we want reap revenge over our old Northern Counties foes,” Quinn told Non League Yorkshire.
“I don’t know if we will get to the stage where we were at in the last game in terms of getting 1000 there.
“I think there will be still a big crowd as there’s some nostalgia for Scarborough fans.
“That day was a great experience for a young team and a team that was punching above its weight in terms of coming up against a powerhouse of Scarborough.
“I think the experience I gained as a manager was unbelievable and there are things we would have differently.
“Things conspired against us. We lost Nick Jagger early on at centre-half so we had to make a change there.
“Ernest Boafo wasn’t fit so things didn’t go to plan in terms of personnel.
“I don’t think it would have affected the result. Scarborough were the better side on the day and more experienced.
“For us it could have two ways. It could have completely collapsed us as a side or club or how we responded by going again the following season.
“That was probably the most pleasing thing about last season – that we came back from such as disappointment and coming so close by pushing a big club all the way.”
Brighouse have made a flying start to life in the Evo Stik after beating Radcliffe Borough on the opening day and then Ossett Albion in midweek.
However, Quinn, who not getting carried away, also believes winning the NCEL is an experience that will be beneficial this season.
“Someone said to me this morning that the fact we have come out of the NCEL where only one team goes up, the pressure of doing that will stand us in a good stead this season.
“We knew there was no margin for error and that mentality will stand us in good stead.
“We couldn’t have asked for a better start, but it’s only a start, that’s all it is.
“While we’re learning the league, we’re just going to try and keep picking up points.”
Tom Matthews and Chris Fisher are doubtful to return for the trip to Clitheroe.
