Some of the greatest players in Garforth Town’s history turned out for the club’s Legend’s Day yesterday to commemorate the Miners’ 50th anniversary.
Dave Parker’s old players from the 1990s took on the stars of Steve Nichol’s 2012 team which guided Garforth to their highest ever league position.
The younger lads, managed by Jamie Price, ran out 6-2 winners against Parker’s men – a side that contained Andy Watson, who sold to Doncaster Rovers for £25,000 in 1999.
Under Parker, Garforth won promotion out of Division One of the NCEL, the West Riding County Cup and also the Wilkinson Sword Trophy during a period which saw them move from Brierlands Lane to Wheatley Park.
Parker told Non League Yorkshire: “It has been smashing for all the lads to come back.
“There are some who we haven’t seen for a long time, probably since they were playing here.
“It’s unfortunate with holidays that some of my younger lads are away on holiday like Damian Holmes and Paul Stevenson. There’s also Simeon Bambrook who is working.
“Some of the lads got a shock when I rang them.
“Darren Faulk, for instance, thought I was ringing up for my fiver that I lent him ten years ago.
“It has been great and we have been reminiscing about some of the things we did.”
It has been a roller coaster for Garforth over the last few years. Nichol guided Town to the Evo Stik Division One North play-offs before the club had a turbulent year and were relegated back to the NCEL.
Had Rupert Lowe, RIASA and a band of local people not stepped in, the Miners would have probably folded well before their 50th celebrations.
Leeds United legend Brendan Ormsby was guest of honour and played the first ten minutes of the hour-long match in which his son, current Tadcaster midfielder Liam, played in.
Current Ossett Albion striker David Brown was the star man as he struck four times after getting in behind the veteran’s back four.
Price and Parker’s successor as manager of Garforth, former Leeds United academy coach Dave Harrison also scored – the latter scoring from the penalty spot.
For Parker’s men, Dave Woodhead scored along with Watson, who took advantage of suspect goalkeeping from Matty Christopher by somehow finding the net from the halfway line.
The match was also organised in the name of former Garforth goalkeeper ‘Spud’ Taylor, who recently passed away.
His son Peter presented the ‘Spud’ Taylor Trophy to Price at the end of the game.
