Liversedge 0-3 Barton Town Old Boys (report by David Paylor)
Barton Town Old Boys FC continued their impressive good run with a victory at Liversedge which proved to be a tough encounter. With a strong wind, sloppy pitch and a uneven surface this was a game to get the result rather concentrate on the performance.
Once again Barton Town started the game strongly with Louis Kirk, Sam Belcher and Gareth Owen all looking to make positive runs towards the Liversedge goal. If anything the pitch didn’t help our forward play as it was difficult to run with the ball and then find the right pass. This proved to be the case as on 17 minutes a good run from Nathan Smith came to nothing as the move broke down as the pass unfortunately didn’t find a Barton player. As the half continued neither side really made a clear cut chance and the referee became increasingly involved which didn’t help the flow of the game. Barton though did look dangerous from set pieces with both Rikki Paylor and Ash Lattimore providing the service. Just before half time the Liversedge keeper pulled off two great saves to keep the score at 0-0. First a great header from captain Ash Dexter was saved well and then minutes later a Ash Lattimore free kick was again saved well. Barton went into the break content that no goals had been conceded and that the chances were starting to come.
The second half again started well for Barton with more positive forward play. The turning point of the game though came on the 51st minute. A defensive mistake gave Liversedge the chance of the game as their striker was presented with a one on one chance but only a fine save from keeper Ben White kept the scores level. Liversedge were made to pay for that mistake as 5 minutes later a Louis Kirk crossed was chested into the back of the net by the Liversedge defender to make it 1-0. This goal made Liversedge have to play more attacking football which left spaces behind for Barton to exploit. Scott Phillips started to find more space and on 60 minutes saw his shot go just over the bar. More refereeing controversy came in the 65th minute as Ash Dexter was given a yellow card for attacking the ball in the air against the Liversegde keeper after a high studs up challenge moments before on Rikki Paylor went unnoticed by the referee. This decision only spurred on Barton to push for the victory which they did on 78 minutes when the ball broke to Corey Mortimer at the edge of the box who curled the ball into the top corner to make it 2-0. The points were then sealed on 85 minutes as Ash Lattimore ran through the Liversedge defence and his cross found Gareth Owen who slotted the ball home from close range to make it 3-0.
