Rudy Funk has returned to football just days after his departure at Scarborough after being appointed as the new AFC Mansfield Town boss.

Mansfield tried to lure Funk to the club over a month ago, but the approach was turned down.

Mansfield instead appointed Dean Short and Dean Mitchell, who have been sacked after their 5-1 win at Louth.

Funk, who won the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division with Scarborough, lives close to Mansfield’s ground.

A statement from AFC Mansfield read: “Today, management duo Dean Short and Dean Mitchell have been relieved of their duties at the club.

“AFC Mansfield would like to thank them both for their efforts in their short stay at the club.

“The club have moved very quickly to appoint their successor and that person is Rudy Funk.”

Chairman Steve Hymas said: “It has been no big secret that our primary target to take the club to the next level was Rudy Funk.

“He has now become available so we have wasted no time in sitting down and agreeing for him to take charge of the club. Some hard decisions have to be made in football and we believe this decision has been made in the best interests of AFC Mansfield.

“We are a very ambitious club and having Rudy at the helm will help us strive for that success. He has a wealth of experience in football and together we believe we now have the right chemistry to make this work.”
