Sam Akeroyd’s late goal appeared to have earned Ossett Town an important victory until Kendal Town mounted an unlikely comeback to win 3-2.
Ossett were chasing a second consecutive Evo Stik Division One North victory and things were going to plan when John Reed’s side took the lead.
Lewis Clarkson’s shot was diverted home by Chris Wood to set Ossett seemingly on their way in the first half.
Jonty McDonald equalised soon after, but as the clock wore on into the last 20 minutes, Ossett thought they had got their winner.
Akeroyd, who was back from a three-game suspension because of the red card in the defeat at Harrogate Railway for grabbing Faltum Ibrahimi by the throat, put the visitors back in front.
The midfielder took his marker on and blasted an effort home from 18-yards into the bottom corner to spark wild scenes from the Ossett bench.
Ossett were holding firm until the 87th minute. Rory Winters headed Kendal’s second equaliser and it spurred the home side on.
Ossett were put under severe pressure and it told as a cross from Lydon Hodgkiss was deflected into the net by Ossett captain Steve Jeff.
A devastating finish for Ossett, who remain rooted in relegation zone.
A positive that Ossett can take is that it was a positive performance.
