Harrogate Railway striker Malachi Farquharson believes he gave his best shot during his trial at Scottish Premiership side St Mirren two weeks ago.

Farquharson, who is tasked leading Railway’s attack in the wake of Nathan Cartman’s departure to Darlington 1883, spent two days with Gary Teale’s side.

The Leeds Beckett University student is a member of former Leeds United striker Brian Deane’s International Academy for Football and Education (IAFE) which is how St Mirren got in touch in him.

Although he has yet to hear back from them, Farquharson is pleased to have had the opportunity.

“St Mirren were looking for a striker and I was recommended by a coach (Steve Grimes) at IAFE and I think St Mirren sent a scout to watch a couple of games,” he said.

“They showed a bit of interest and wanted to have a look at me over two days.

“I went over, one to train and one to play in a behind-closed doors game.

“I thought I did well. The tempo was a lot higher and they were physical, but I felt I put myself about and did my best.

“It was a great opportunity to go and see what the environment was like. It was an opportunity I had to grab with both hands.”

Farquharson graduates in the summer from his Sports Coaching and Development degree and he is currently unsure where he will be doing his masters.

That could mean that the Birmingham-born striker, who has also played for Northampton Town and Sutton Coldfield Town, could only play the one full season at Station View.

However, if he does depart at the end of the campaign, he will be well-remembered.

Injuries prevented him starting the season with Railway, but he had an immediate impact when replacing Lamin Colley in the side in October.

He formed a deadly partnership with the Evo Stik Division One North leading goal-scorer Cartman.

Cartman hit 36, while the Birmingham-born striker has scored 11 times, but provided a substantial number of assists.

His finest hour so far has been the four-goal haul in the sensational 7-1 destruction of higher-league Frickley Athletic.

On Cartman and the effect of his departure, he said: “I was gutted when he left because he’s a good player who I got on well with.

“We developed an understanding. We picked each other’s runs up on the pitch.

“We have to adapt and when you’re scoring goals you’re always going to get noticed.

“I wish him all the best, but we have to move on.”
