New Ossett Town star Danny Cunningham was the hero as John Reed’s men moved further away from the Evo Stik Division One North drop zone with a late 3-2 win over Brighouse Town.

Ossett came from behind twice to earn three more crucial points at the 4G Voice and Data Stadium.

The afternoon began badly for Ossett as poor defending allowed Tom Matthews to put Brighouse in front.

Nathan Curtis dragged back Ossett back into it with curling left-footed effort on the stroke of half-time.

Brighouse took the lead again on the hour mark as Ernest Boafo’s cross was met by Matthews, who scored his second goal of the afternoon.

Ossett dug in and created pressure at the other end and they got their rewards as a corner dropped nicely for Grant Allott and the defender hammered the ball home.

Cunnington then became the hero with a superb solo run which left former Ossett player Chris Fisher for dead.

Cunnington, who signed for Ossett last week from West Yorkshire League side Field, went for glory himself and found the near post.

The win sets up the perfect opportunity to close in on safety on Tuesday when struggling Prescot Cables visit.
