Brighouse Town Ladies defeated league leaders Barnsley on Sunday with a single strike in the 70th Minute from Lindsey Hopton to keep her side in the hunt for the North Eastern Regional Women’s Football League Premier league title.

Brighouse are currently eight points behind their opponents Barnsley but with four games in hand they have a good chance of claiming their second successive title after being crowned Southern section champions last season.

York City Ladies moved joint top of the table with a narrow 2-1 victory at bottom club Castleford White Rose.

The hosts are without a league victory so far this season but were holding their higher-ranked opponents until a late goal finally ended their hopes.

Appropriately it was leading scorer Alicia Smith with the decisive finish – her thirteenth goal of the season – right at the death.

Markswoman Smith had already opened the visitors’ account during the first-half, while Becca Dawson was later named as their player of the match.
