York City moved to the top of the North Eastern Regional Football League Premier League after a 4-0 away win at Scunthorpe and Bottesford on Sunday. On target for the Minster Belles was Alicia Smith, Jazz Whitwell, Megan Bramham and Ellie Randall.
York’s path to the summit was made possible by title hopefuls Hull City who inflicted a heavy defeat on the former table toppers Barnsley. Hull won 5-1 with goals from Ellice Jackman, Zoe Mitchell, Sarah Owen and a Brace from Jo Symington.
The other title hopefuls Brighouse Town had a fine 3-0 away win at Wakefield Ladies to move up to fourth spot. Julie Richardson opened the scoring for Town on 25 minutes Shauna Messenger doubled their lead and Racheal White completed the afternoons scoring after 83 minutes to cap off a fine team performance played in very difficult conditions.
In the Southern section there were big wins for Farsley at home to Westella which sees them move into second place just ahead of Wetherby Athletic who didn’t play. Farsley went 3-0 up by half time thanks to strikes from Demi Godson and Ellie Swinhoe. Katherine Paul-Bird scored after the interval to complete the 4-0 win, and Sheffield Wednesday who put eleven past Dearne & District, Ossett Albion were defeated away at Courts City (4-1) Nicola Smith with Albion’s consolation goal.
There were three West Riding League Cup games on Sunday. Harrogate Railway went through 3-0 at Battyeford firsts and both Tingley Athletic sides went through, their firsts 7-2 at Brighouse Town development and the reserves 9-2 at Ilkley.
In the WRCWFL Shield, Brighouse Athletic battled through to win 3-0 against Hepworth United.
Tyersal were equal to Altofts with good work from Kayleigh Tingle, Sophie Woodrup and goalkeeper Amy Jackson as the first half remained goal-less. However, two own goal deflections in the second half saw their First Division hosts progress 3-0.
Bradford City ‘A’ were down 1-0 at Gledhow, but went through 3-1 against the First Division leaders.
Wetherby reserves beat Premier Division Hemsworth, 2-1 in extra time. The next round is on 22 March.
