Bridlington Town extended their winning streak in the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division to four games with a confident 2-1 victory over Albion Sports.
It was a great result considering the Seasiders arrived at the Throstle Nest just half-an-hour before the game due to a car fire on the Stanningley Bypass which caused chaos in West Leeds.
It left Gary Allanson’s men with little time to warm-up and their lack of a sufficient warm-up was noticeable in the first ten minutes.
After eight minutes, Albion’s danger man Danny Facey found his way through on goal with ease, only to be denied opening the scoring after a fine save from James Hitchcock.
Seconds later Facey again found himself one-on-one, but his hopeful shot was inches away from finding its way into the back of the net. Hitchcock watched on as the shot thundered onto the crossbar.
Bridlington used the first 10 minutes to find their feet, and their persistence paid off as Connor Harman opened the scoring after 14 minutes. Will Waudby’s cross across the face of goal eventually found its way to Harman who finished emphatically.
Seconds after the Seasiders put the score a goal to the good, Facey was again in a goal-scoring position. He was denied again by the woodwork as he latched on to Hitchcock’s fine save from Lee Elam’s initial shot, only for the post to keep Bridlington in front.
But Bridlington’s lead wasn’t long lived as Albion levelled the scoring after 23 minutes, with Alex Cusak beating the offside trap to hammer the ball home.
Albion could have taken the lead going into half time, a string of corners minutes before the interval saw Elam and Cusack head narrowly over the bar as the game went to half-time at 1-1.
Allanson’s men came into the second half with an eagerness to attack, and after six minutes of pressing the hosts they finally found a breakthrough as Chris Adams tapped into an open after Aaron Brian parried Waudby’s shot into his path.
The home side had a golden opportunity to put the game back to a draw when Facey found himself with yards of space, but again couldn’t find the back of the net as frustration began to show for the Albion striker.
Moments later Albion wasted another opportunity to level the scoring, as Elam dragged his shot wide on the hour mark.
With chances coming far and few between in the final half an hour for the home side, Bridlington operated a defensive mentality as they denied Facey and Elam continually as they held out for a well-deserved three points.
