Dave Bordman’s dramatic last minute penalty in the 2-1 win over Handsworth Parramore edged Nostell Miners Welfare closer to safety in the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division.
The surprise victory – their fifth in eight league games – puts Nostell above fellow strugglers Liversedge on goal difference.
It was Nostell captain Bordman who stepped out of the shadow of his injured brother Rob to score both goals in the priceless win.
The club’s leading goal-scorer Rob was struck in the face with a stray ball during Saturday’s success over Albion Sports and he later visited hospital with concussion.
That ruled him out for last night alongside several others including suspended midfielder James Davies.
Paul Lines was forced to field a patched-up side and in came debutant centre-back Adam Clayton. Rothwell juniors striker James Kitson also appeared as did 16-year-old winger Billy Mole.
All three played their part in a game that Nostell were the better side for a long period.
Mole and his fellow winger Steve Wales were constant menaces for the Handsworth defence.
Kitson came the closest to the opening the scoring in the first half with a half-volley that was cleared off-the-line by Nathan Joynes.
Bordman ignited the second half with a superb goal – one reminiscent of his strike against Garforth last month.
The midfielder had space and time to hit a wonder strike into the top corner from 25 yards.
Nostell seemingly had the game under control for a long period, but a bolt out of the blue put Handsworth in the ascendancy.
Handsworth’s captain Steve Woolley pulled a rabbit of the hat with a similar goal to Bordman’s to draw his side level with 15 minutes remaining.
Nostell were happy to take the point as Handsworth were piling on the pressure, but a counter-attack in the second minute of added time somehow plucked a winner.
Kitson, an unknown quantity in the NCEL, got the better of his defender and prepared to bear down on Parramore goalkeeper Andrew Sneath.
The striker’s touch was too strong and the ball ran out of play, but he was caught by Sneath.
Referee Gareth Rhodes was quick to point the spot and Bordman sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to earn his side an important victory in their survival battle.
