A late sucker punch effectively ended Tadcaster Albion’s Toolstation NCEL Premier Division title hopes.

Tadcaster could only draw 1-1 with Athersley Recreation at i2i Sports Stadium after Danny Joynes’ late equaliser.

Josh Greening had put Tadcaster in front with a strike from the edge of the area in a game they dominated.

But, they could not add the decisive second goal despite the best efforts of Lewis Clarkson and Nick Thompson.

Against the run of play, Joynes salvaged a point for Athersley.

Tadcaster Albion manager Paul Marshall:

“I’m absolutely devastated.

“The Highworth was bad enough, but that draw was quite a comparison.

“We have controlled that game and we made two mistakes.

“We have been given a lifeline this week and we have thrown that lifeline away.

“There’s no pressure now. Worksop and Shaw Lane are the favourites and Cleethorpes also have a chance. I think that was it for us today.”

Tadcaster Albion: Morgan, Ingram, Miller, Ormsby, Stimpson, Milne. Barrett, Jonathan Greening, Thompson, Claisse, Josh Greening. Subs: Lawrie, Ward, Clarkson, Bissett, Brown.
