Glasshoughton Welfare will need a miracle if they want to avoid relegation back to Division One of the Toolstation NCEL after a 1-0 defeat to Parkgate at Leeds Road.

The loss was compounded by goalkeeper Josh Archer’s late red card.

Glasshoughton, who have a goals difference of minus -110, have endured a disastrous season in the Premier Division having only won three league games all season.

Welfare have also received several double figures beatings and they will need to win at least three of their final six games to overhaul second bottom Retford United.

Welfare have been in the Premier Division since Craig Elliott lifted them out of the doldrums in 2012.

One goal, after just two minutes, settled this game. With help from the heavy wind, Scott Whittington’s corner was flicked home by Adam Stapleford-Jones.

Ben Langford almost doubled Parkgate’s lead, but his volley thundered back off the crossbar.

Parkgate had plenty of chances to increase their score, but Archer, as normal, kept the score down.

Archer made his early exit in the closing minutes. The young stopper, who has won plenty of plaudits this season, lost possession of the ball out of his area to Parkgate’s Piers Bond.

Bond was set to run away and score into an empty goal before Archer rugby-tackled him to the ground. That left referee Michael Brownsett with only one option – to show a red card.

Archer faces a two-match ban having been sent off earlier in the season.
