Pontefract Collieries have been rocked after potential new signing Josh Archer broke his leg in a pre-season friendly at Riccall United last night.

The awful incident happened on the stroke of half-time in a game that Toolstation NCEL Premier Division side Pontefract were leading 1-0 through a rare Josh Corbett goal.

An ambulance was called and Pontefract joint manager Nick Handley asked for the match to be abandoned.

Young goalkeeper Archer won many plaudits for his performances in a poor Glasshoughton Welfare team last season and has attracted interest from many clubs.

Handley said: “We’re absolutely devastated about Josh.

“It has shocked us a lot and we’ll do anything we can to help him while he recovering.

“As far as we’re aware, he has broken tibia and fibula bones. I believe they operating on him this morning (Tuesday).

“It is a tragedy. He’s a young goalkeeper, who was in the youth ranks at York City before playing for Glasshoughton last season.

“Despite their position in the table, he got a lot of good reports and we were looking at signing him.”
