Late equaliser denies Hemsworth

Hemsworth Miners Welfare were just minutes away from an Evo Stik Division One North scalp in the 2-2 draw with Ossett Albion last night.

Nash Connolly clawed Hemsworth back from the jaws of a defeat and seemingly on the path to victory with two goals until Connor Brunt’s equaliser.

The exciting finish to the match did not look possible after a first half which provided few chances.

Rob Bordman did strike the post on two occasions for Albion and visiting Neil Bennett did pull make two saves, but that was about it.

The second half quickly became a lively affair as Albion second half goalkeeper Adam Rhodes was needed to bat a powerful John Whitehead attempt over the crossbar.

Hesitation from the Hemsworth goalkeeper set up Ossett’s opener on the hour. The stopper failed to deal with the ball on the edge of the penalty area and Bordman, who else, was waiting to lob him and score.

To Hemsworth’s credit, they kept going by building pressure and they got their reward, albeit in fortuitous circumstances.

Rhodes came running out of his area, but collided with Connolly and defender Sam Maddock. To complete the comedy of errors, Maddock actually headed the ball past Rhodes in the collision. Connolly ran onto the loose ball and placed it into the empty net.

More poor defending followed as Connolly went through on goal and easily fired Hemsworth ahead.

Hemsworth seemed to be on course for victory until Brunt struck with a low finish to have the final word.
