Mick Norbury was left disappointed by Glasshoughton’s 4-2 defeat at Askern

Mick Norbury was left disappointed when Glasshoughton Welfare lost 4-2 at Central Midlands League outfit Askern.

Glasshoughton actually opened brightly and a cross after 9 minutes from Regan Fish was headed just wide by Luke Norbury.

At the other end trialist goalkeeper Clayton Alsopp made a great block to prevent the hosts taking the lead.

After 22 minutes Akern took the lead when a simple through ball was fumbled by Alsopp and the ball was easily converted by Paul Munday

A minute later another mix up between Alsopp and a defender left the keeper in no mans land and again Munday slotted the ball home.

Welfare came back and after a free kick was blocked Dan Corley drove just wide.

After 31 minutes welfare pulled a goal back. A Phil Lindley free kick fom the left was missed by the Askern keeper and Luke Norbury hooked the ball home.

Just before half time Del Pollock was hauled down on the edge of the Askern area but the resulting free kick was blocked.

After stern words by manager Norbury at the break welfare started the second period well. Great play between Corley, Fish, and substitute Andy Seed, saw the latter put a great ball across the face of the Askern goal and it was knocked in by Norbury.

Welfare then made a raft of substitutes and one of these, Tom Coyles immediately showed class by blocking a goal bound effort on the edge of the welfare area.

Another substitute, former Garforth player, Joe Woodger then put Corley through but his shot was dragged wide.

After 80 minutes Askern scored their third goal. A hotly disputed foul by welfare defender Jimmy Williams saw Joe Byran somehow beat Alsopp to his right with the keeper seemingly unsighted by his defensive wall.

In the last minute Askern got their fourth when again Alsopp and a defender dithered at the left of the penalty area. The keeper came for the ball but it was knocked past him and Michael Attard had the easy job of walking the ball into the net.

Glasshoughton entertain ambitious West Yorkshire League side Shelley on Tuesday at Leeds Road.
