Talented Frickley Athletic striker Reece Thompson is going on trial at League One outfit Barnsley.

Young Thompson, who was playing in the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division for Retford United at the start of last season, has just spent a week with York City – playing in last Wednesday’s friendly with Leeds United.

He did impress current York boss and former Frickley player Russ Wilcox, but an offer made to Frickley was rejected as it did not meet their asking price.

Lee Johnson’s Barnsley is the latest club to show an interest in Thompson and he will start training with them from Monday 27th July.

Thompson was a revelation for Frickley last season, despite the big step-up from the NCEL to the Evo Stik Premier Division.

His campaign ended with a key role in Frickley Athletic’s Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup final triumph at the New York Stadium.

Frickley’s chairman Gareth Dando said last week: “Reece has come on leaps and bounds over the last six months and has become an important member of the side which is one reason why we agreed a contract for the next two seasons.

“We’ve had interest from a number of clubs in the Championship and League One but any deal has to be right for Reece’s long term future and for the club.”
