Glasshoughton Welfare came away from Evo-Stik Division One South outfit Goole AFC with a well-earned 2-2 draw on Saturday in another pre-season friendly game.
Welfare twice took the lead with goals from Del Pollock and Danny Corley, but former Louth striker Jamie Coulson pegged the scores back with a brace.
It was a great result considering Glasshoughton had to borrow Goole’s goalkeeper Peter Fotko for the match.
On the renowned huge Goole pitch welfare opened well and a cross from Pollock was cleared away.
The hosts showed class however when a right wing cross was hammered just over the welfare bar and then Sean Dickinson floated a 20 yard shot just wide of an upright.
Welfare were not sitting back though and Cawley saw a cross-come shot just miss a post before a Jimmy Williams long ball from halfway just failed to find Pollock.
Sam Colbear hit a shot over the welfare bar and then on 20 minutes Pollock should have put welfare in the lead when he found himself with only French goalkeeper Thomas Beaurepaire to beat. However, he missed his kick.
Goole came back and a great Matt Semley cross saw Coulson fire over the bar.
A cross from the Welfare right was headed just wide by John Forsyth.
Then just after Goole had a shot charged down, Welfare took the lead. Great interlinking play on the left saw the ball reach Pollock and he made no mistake, burying the the ball past Beaurepaire to his left.
In the 45th minute it was 1-1 when welfare defender Joe Woodger tried to pass back to Fotko from 35 yards. The ball fell short and Coulson went around the keeper to walk the ball into the net.
Goole decided to withdraw Fotko at the interval due to injury and Welfare’s Jimmy Williams donned the gloves with assistant manager Phil Lindley replacing him in defence.
Williams was immediately tested when Sean Dickinson bore down on goal but he scuffed his shot wide.
On 51 minutes welfare took the lead for the second time. Once again good work by a number of players saw the ball reach Cawley on the edge of the area and his lovely left foot shot deceived Beaurepaire.
The lead only lasted nine minutes when Coulson got his second goal. A slip on the left edge of the Welfare area saw the ball played into the middle of the goal area and Coulson easily beat Williams.
Welfare made a number of changes and one to come on was Ian Blackburn. He showed good skill on the ball several times and was unlucky when a snap shot was parried for a corner by Beaurepaire.
In the last few minutes Welfare survived a goalmouth scramble when Williams saved low to his left and then a shot was fired over.
Goole nearly won it on 88 minutes when a quickly taken free kick found Semley 25 yards out and his thunderous shot hit the Welfare bar and bounced over.
