York City manager Russ Wilcox is continuing to pursue his interest in Reece Thompson after the Frickley Athletic striker struck a wonder goal against Premier League giants Newcastle United.
Wilcox, a former Frickley player, has already had one bid turned down for the player, who actually started last season in the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division with Retford United.
Wilcox told the York Press: “He wants to come to York City. Whether we can do that deal is another matter.
“We have put a bid on the table to Frickley and we are waiting to hear their response. After his goal, who knows?”
Wilcox added about the importance of doing a deal quickly: “We are trying to do that. It was always a difficult one because you want to have another look but you don’t want people doing what they did with (Danny) Johnson.
“They don’t have to do any work on him and it is ‘I’ll just go and watch him play against Newcastle’.
“We have done all the spade work. I have watched him play at Frickley and, hopefully, we will be rewarded by Reece coming and signing for York City.”
