Frickley Athletic striker Reece Thompson’s move to York City has been completed for an undisclosed fee.
Frickley have agreed a substantial sell-on-clause with York.
Thompson has signed a two-year deal with an option for a third year with the Minstermen – nine years on from when current Sheffield United winger Martyn Woolford made the same move.
The League Two club have been chasing Thompson for a number of weeks and interest intensified after his goal against Newcastle United last week.
It has been a remarkable 12 months for Thompson, who began last season playing for Paul Ward at Retford in the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division.
Frickley chairman Gareth Dando said: “We’ve had a lot of interest in Reece and a number of offers for the player over the past few weeks.
“We got to a situation last week where we received offers from two clubs which matched our valuation of the player and the decision was then up to Reece.
“We wish him well at York and are sure he’ll be a success there.”
