Westella VIP
Leon Sewell’s initial plan for Westella VIP is to establish them as an Toolstation NCEL Division One club.
The NCEL new-boys were promoted from the Central Midlands League in the summer and making their league debut at Eccleshill United.
It has been a long dream for Westella to compete in the NCEL and Sewell admits that.
“The main aim is to consolidate and enjoy it,” Sewell told Non League Yorkshire.
“On a personal level with the play-offs being introduced it does give extra incentive to do well.
“For us, its our first year in the NCEL so let’s consolidate and then let’s push and try and get in the play-offs.
“It is exciting times for the club as it has taken 15 years to get to this level.
“In 2000 Westella was a Humber Premier League club so It is a massive achievement for the club to be playing in the NCEL.
“It means a lot to everyone and the players are looking forward to the season, as are the committee.
“Let’s get the first game out of the way and see where we go.”
It is also a return to the NCEL for Sewell, who was sacked by Selby Town back in 2011 after just nine games in charge and no victories.
Sewell and Westella will face Selby in a few weeks in the League Cup, but he is not bearing grudges.
“If I’m honest I was 25 and probably a little bit out of my depth,” he said.
“It was probably too big a job at the time.
“I went onto coach at Askern under Brian Johnston which aided my development and was another massive learning curve because I learnt a lot.
“You have to take the rough with the smooth so there is no hard feelings.
“I have massive respect for (Selby chairman) Ralph Pearse and (secretary) Tommy Arkley for the work they do at Selby.”
