Ossett Albion battled well against a strong Witton Albion side in their opening Evo Stik Division One North game of the season, but lost out 1-0.

Witton shaded the first half and while Albion defended well, they did however have a long range effort from Rob Bordman tipped over the bar.

Ossett Albion were much livelier in the second half and both Bordman, who starts a two match suspension this week for comments made about a referee on social media, and Nicky Matthews went close.

The Witton goal came on 71 minutes somewhat against the run of play. A mistimed back pass from Kieran Thompson allowed Alex Titchiner to intercept, round keeper Brett Souter and tap into an empty net.

Thompson made amends minutes later when he blocked a goal bound shot to stop Titchiner from killing Albion off.

Despite coming away empty handed Albion gave a good account of themselves and are hoping for a more successful season.

Ossett Albion: Souter, Thompson, Hardaker, Wright, Riordan, South, Matthews (Brunt), Jones (Muller), Bordman, Birch, Bojang (Milnes). Subs unused: Paylor, Hoyle.
