Hull United provided the perfect response yesterday afternoon when they proved too strong for Dronfield Town in the 3-0 victory in front of a bumper crowd at the Breathe For Cameron Stadium.
Coming off the back of a drab 1-0 defeat at Teversal in the League Cup on Tuesday, Brett Agnew’s first goal of the season on two minutes helped settle the hosts down as they strolled to victory against the early season pace-setters in the Toolstation NCEL Division One encounter.
After wrestling clear of Matthew Darloe, a player who made one appearance for the Citizens in pre-season Agnew’s first angled effort had the sting of the shot taken away from a save with the legs by Steven Booth, however Agnew sniffed out his opener and latched onto the rebound to set the supporters in the stand behind the goal into scenes of celebration.
Agnew, dedicated his goal celebration to young Cameron Good, the young boy who passed away in November of last year.
A simple point to the stars, a goal of which the young avid footballer himself would have been proud of.
Jamie Richardson’s ever present pace was again a huge threat, as it has been in all the opening games so far in United’s fledgling NCEL campaign.
The former Hedon man wriggled clear to win a corner on ten minutes. The resulting set-piece almost saw United double their advantage. Jack Walters whipping a devilish in swinging corner from the right, narrowly evading everybody by the smallest of margins. A goal was on the cards if the ball had taken any deflection before drifting out for a goal kick.
After Daniel Hoyland wasted the visitors only effort on goal after twelve minutes from a curling free kick which sailed harmlessly wide of Phil Dobson’s goal, Hull United had a chance of their own.
A fine run by Jordan Harrison resulted in a cross goal effort being punched clear by Booth, whilst Booth again thwarted Richardson with his legs, standing up well to deny Richardson from close range.
United started the second period almost like they had the first half. After bringing on Matty Start for Jordan Harrison during the break it was James Playford’s deep cross that was centred at the far post into the path of Agnew who’s powerful volley took a deflection on its way to flying over the cross bar.
The Citizens were not denied though eleven minutes after the restart as they doubled the lead. Jamie Richardson’s superb determination presented him with a great chance and he duly applied the finish from close range and as he tapped home from a central position inside the area.
The vocal Hull United support who had got behind the team throughout were brought to their feet one more time with three minutes to go as Hull United made sure of the points through the lively Matty Start.
Introduced at half time Start‘s pace was a menace as he deserved his goal. A fine move led to Start turning in a pin-point centre from the right into the net from close range.
Having also basked in glorious sunshine throughout the match, the majority of the 617 supporters went home happy, none more so then Rob Davis and his son Alfie who’s day was capped off by winning a new Nissan Micra as compliments from Hull United.
