Nathan Curtis popped up with the dramatic last gasp header to earn Ossett Town their first win of the season with the 2-1 victory at Brighouse Town.
After the gloom of the 4-0 defeat to Northwich Victoria on the opening Evo Stik Division One North day, Ossett couldn’t have responded in better fashion.
New signing David Brown got them off to a flying start as he connected with former Brighouse defender Tyrone Gay’s header at the back-post inside three minutes.
A healthy crowd of 269 watched Brighouse then put their visitors under the cosh. Ryan Hall sent thunderous effort at goal which crashed back off the crossbar in a wave of early attacks for Brighouse straight after the opener.
After surviving the response, Ossett seemed comfortable for a long period and Brown came close to catching Town goalkeeper Paul Hagreen out with a lob.
Against the run of play, Brighouse equalised. Ossett were caught out by the long ball and allowed Ernest Boafo to go through on goal. Tom Morgan managed to save his effort, but debutant Steve Hollingworth was able to slide the ball home.
Brighouse had the most energy at the start of the second half and Ossett did well to hang on.
Former Farsley goalkeeper Morgan saved his team’s bacon with two excellent saves from James Pollard and Ryan Hall.
The home side couldn’t score and the last 20 minutes had little quality. Dreadful referee Michael Brownsett had the starring role for a lot of the closing stages as he was throwing yellow cards around like confetti.
In the end, Brighouse were the orchestrators of their own downfall. Former Ossett player Chris Fisher committed a needless foul near the corner flag and his side paid the price – a minute into injury-time.
The experienced Dave Merris floated a wonderful free kick into the six-yard box and the unmarked Curtis headed home past Hagreen.
Brighouse’s woes were compounded when an angry Fisher was sent packing after using an offensive four-letter towards Brownsett before play restarted. He now faces a three-match ban.
