Pontefract Collieries are happy with their current squad, but Nick Handley doesn’t rule out the prospect of new signings.

The recruitment of Ruben Jerome and Danny Barlow concluded a busy few days last week ahead of the Penistone Church FA Cup game.

But, those two are the only signings planned by Pontefract at this current point in time, according to joint manager Handley.

“We have been busy, but you can’t stand still in this league,” he said.

“Any manager in this league knows that during the summer when you’re trying to sign players, people are humming and harring about what they’re going to do.

“We spoke to Ruben Jerome all summer and he’s been adamant that he would.

“The same goes to Danny as he wasn’t sure what he was going to do in the summer.

“We don’t really want to bring anymore in as we have a good squad, but as any manager would say, if a better player came along and the commitment is there for the season then you would look at them.”

Pontefract host Worksop Town tomorrow, a full two weeks after the disappointing Toolstation NCEL Premier Division opening day defeat to Armthorpe Welfare.

However, Handley, who runs the team with Duncan Bray and Russ Eagle, feels his side aren’t at full strength just yet.

“I wasn’t there, but the lads have said that we didn’t defend well which is not like us,” he said.

“It didn’t go to plan, but I do feel that we are a week or so behind other teams.

“At Penistone we had three or four players out who would add competition.

“When you look at the squad it is full of quality and if we had everyone there then.”
