Danny Cawley and Glasshoughton lost heavily at Vauxhall in the FA Vase
Glasshoughton Welfare suffered a humiliating 5-0 defeat to Cheshire League side Vauxhall Motors in the FA Vase first qualifying round.
It was easily Welfare’s worst performance of the season, and they simply had no answer to the fast attacking motors forwards.
The game got off to the worst possible start for Welfare when captain Jimmy Williams conceded a free kick after only 2 minutes and Motors captain Jordan Brierley drove the ball in from 25 yards somehow beating debutant goalkeeper Jordan Watson at his right hand post
Despite Welfare attacking straight after the goal and seeing Del Pollock just beaten to the ball by home goalkeeper John Rushton, they found themselves two down on 19 minutes when Motors man of the match Jamie Matthews skipped through the defence and his pass found John Atkinson who slotted past Watson.
It was all Motors now and Karl Herbert forced Watson into a good save before the keeper managed to parry away another long range effort.
Welfare came back for a period when Pollock went in on Rushton only for his effort to be blocked. Luke Norbury headed over when it seemed easier to score and Danny Cawley fired high over when Rushton flapped at a free kick into the hosts penalty area.
Welfare were three down after 32 minutes when Motors attacked down the right. A fierce shot was parried up by Watson and Atkinson pounced onto the rebound to fire home.
For Welfare Josh Morley hammered a free kick just wide but then great football by the motors players on the left saw Matthews slide the ball past Watson on 40 minutes. Just before half-time it should have been five when Atkinson prodded wide from an Atkinson pass and then Mark Jones drove a shot just over the Welfare bar.
Welfare looked more interested at the start of the second half. Ryan Smith shot just wide and then Regan Fish broke down the right but ran the ball out of play. John Forsyth hit a pile-driver towards goal but it was brilliantly tipped away by Rushton. Norbury also headed a cross onto the roof of the net
Motors were always dangerous though with Matthews skipping down the left. His pass caused mayhem in the Welfare defence and a resulting shot was driven wide by Atkinson. Knynan Mason shot over the bar as did Kal Herbert.
Matthews dragged a shot wide before he slotted past Watson on 71 minutes after great work down the right by Atkinson.
To sum up a bad day for Welfare there was a push in the penalty area on 80 minutes, but the resultant Loius Penty spot kick was well saved by Rushton down to his right.
Just before the end a Penty strong back pass to Watson deceived the keeper who then had to make a desperate clearance to stop a sixth goal.
