Selby show no mercy to terrible Askern

Kingsley Wetherald won’t forget Selby Town’s 12-0 annihilation of terrible Askern in a hurry after incredibly scoring six of their goals.

Once as Alex Rennie left his team high and dry by handling on the goal-line which meant he was red carded after just 30 seconds, the writing was on the wall for Askern in the FA Vase first qualifying round tie.

The Central Midlands League outfit completely collapsed straight after Wetherald converted the penalty.

Craig Muirhead had added Selby’s second goal by the third minute, clearly showing that the visitors were going to be on the end of a heavy beating.

For the rest of the match it was attack against defence as Selby goalkeeper Ciaran Gibson was a mere spectator. The Toolstation NCEL Division One side were methodical in their approach and did not use the opportunity to take pot shots from all angles.

With midfielder Ash Hope pulling the strings, Selby passed and passed until the right moment presented itself for a shot. A chance soon opened up for Hope, who curled a low effort into the bottom corner in the 18th minute.

It was a thumbs-up all round from Selby boss Dave Ricardo

Wetherald completed his first hat-trick the scoring the final two goals of the first half with composed finishes on both occasions.

Selby should have even notched a sixth up right on the stroke of the interval, but Muirhead somehow managed to hit the crossbar from only a couple of yards out.

Tom Chamberlain, on as a substitute at half-time, did eventually score Selby’s inevitable next goal with a straightforward tap-in in the early exchanges of the second half.

Askern had a brief break from conceding as Selby waited until the 70th minute to strike again. That was from a Ash Robinson that Will Pepper powered home to score his first goal for the club.

Only a couple of Askern playets emerged with credit from the final quarter of an hour as most of them gave up. Former Pontefract striker Wetherald provided the assist for youngster Martin Jones to score before grabbing his fourth by bending a shot into the net from distance.

A further penalty then took his tally to five and Selby up to ten.

By now Askern were praying for the final whistle to be blown. However, there was more still to come from Selby, who still had loads of gas in the tank.

The final two goals were very similar as both contained long runs from the providers.

Chamberlain did the running down the right-wing for Selby’s eleventh of the afternoon. He crossed and gave Wetherald a simple tap-in which sealed his second treble.

Askern actually won their first corner of the game in the third minute of injury-time. It was poorly-taken and Selby counter-attacked with Wetherald leading the charge.

The striker reached the penalty area and waited for his captain Dane Mortimer, who made a run like an express train from his own six-yard-box. Wetherald slid the ball across and Mortimer forced the ball home and completely a miserable afternoon for Askern.

Selby Town manager Dave Ricardo:

“If we have broken the club’s record win it is nice and great for the players, the committee and the chairman.

“Hopefully people locally will sit up and notice it. In all our games this season we have created lots of opportunities, it has just been a case of taking them.

“Today Kingsley Wetherald managed to take all his chances and that’s something we have been lacking.

“I’m pleased for him that he scored his goals. However, if we don’t beat Teversal on Tuesday then our win is long-forgotten.”
