Wayne Benn believes Hemsworth Miners Welfare aren’t firing on all cylinders, despite a positive start to the Toolstation NCEL Division One season.

Unbeaten Hemsworth are fifth after six games which have brought four wins and two draws – the latest victory being in midweek against Westella VIP.

Benn told Non League Yorkshire: “Despite our results, I don’t think we have been at our best, apart from maybe the Eccleshill game.

“That’s not being disrespectful to the opposition that we have played in Selby, Westella, Teversal.

“I don’t think we have hit our straps yet and I don’t think we are playing anywhere near where we are capable of.

“That’s a good thing because we are still winning games and picking up points. We know we have one or two people to come back into the side that will make us stronger.

“We know from our experiences of last year that we can play much better than we are at the moment.

“I’m really pleased with results, less pleased with performances.”

Summer signing Shane Kelsey is now available again after recovering from a broken foot.

However, he has been restricted to bit-part appearances since his return and Benn admits that he is not rushing him back.

He added: “He’s a while yet from being ready to play 90 minutes.

“Hopefully in the next few weeks we can get him more game-time. We will then pick and choose games where we think we can get 90 minutes out of him.

“We don’t ideally want a player of his quality sitting on our bench, but we have to sensible and careful because he’s coming back from a broken foot.”
