Selby Town comprehensively beat Glasshoughton Welfare 4-0 to record their first Toolstation NCEL Division One win in three games.
Glasshoughton keeper Matt Stables was forced to make three good saves in the opening five minutes. The Robins looked keen and eager to forget the mid week disappointment as a Ash Hope corner found Dane Mortimer who’s accurate header was again saved by Stables.
On 25 minutes Kingsley Wetherald almost opened the scoring for Town against his former club as he tried to walk the ball into the back of the net but Stables recovered and it remained goalless- a real missed opportunity.
Craig Muirhead then carved open the defence with a strong run only to shoot over the bar, in the closing minutes of the half Glasshoughton had a brief revival but never mounted any plausible goal threat- Mortimer and co staying solid at the back.
The majority of the home support were still in the bar as Tom Chamberlain gave the Robins the lead immediately after the second half kicked off- thanks to a very selfless piece of play from Wetherald who beat all in front of him on his run to the goal line.
However, the fans didn’t have to wait long to see the next goal as Town found themselves on the attack again and Hope hit a 30 yard wonder strike to double the lead (2-0 48 minutes). Town appeared to have increased the pace and intensity of the game somewhat and Glasshoughton struggled to cope with this.
Selby had to wait until the 70th minute to score their next goal. Hope took the corner and with pin point accuracy found the head of the rising Mortimer who out jumped the defence to head Town into a seemingly unassailable 3 goal lead.
The Town attack continued to reign on the Glasshoughton defence with Wetherald and Mortimer, but Glasshoughton almost pulled one back as goalkeeper Ciaran Gibson failed to clear the ball. In the closing stages the visitors were under sustained pressure, Muirhead almost making it four before Town received consecutive free kicks. Hope with the second again found Mortimer who rose above the defence to head home for his second and Towns fourth in the final minute.
