Glasshoughton Welfare halted a slide of defeats by drawing 3-3 with Penistone Church at Leeds Road.

Welfare took a two goal lead within 20 minutes with strikes from Ryan Smith and Kingsley Weatherald, who returned to the club after a spell at Selby Town.

Penistone pegged the hosts back with two goals also in the first half and it looked bleak for Welfare just after halftime when they took the lead. However a second from Smith gave welfare a share of the points.

Penistone opened strongly and Jordan Watson in the home goal was forced into a great save within the first two minutes tipping a Lewis Dickinson shot for a corner.

Welfare took the lead on five minutes when after a scramble in the Penistone penalty area the ball reached Smith ten yards out and he rifled the ball past Adam Rhodes.

Welfare were going allout for a second and a dangerous cross from Tom Coyles was headed away for a home corner. Weatherhald forced Rhodes into a great save but at the other end welfare captain Jimmy Williams made a great block to thwart a fierce shot.

Welfare went two up on twenty minutes when a great ball from Josh Morley to Weatherald saw the new welfare striker lob Rhodes from thirty yards out as the keeper tried to close him down.

Penistone pulled a goal back two minutes later when Danny Barlow hit a direct free kick in from the left which deceived Watson and his defence at the far post.

Welfare then replaced the injured Steve Palfrey with Luke Norbury but Penistone were now up for the game and Watson made a great block with his feet before Barlow shot wide.

Penistone drew level on thirty eight minutes when a corner reached lewis Dickinson and he flicked the ball towards goal. It seemed that Morley had headed the ball off the line but the assistant referee deemed that the ball was over the line when Morley headed away.

The second half open badly for welfare when on the fourty eight minute Duncan Richards fired home from sixteen yards after a goalmouth scramble in the welfare area.

Five minutes later welfare were level when a great pass from the right by Regan Fish saw the ball reach Smith who slotted past Rhodes into the far corner.

Welfare should have got a fourth soon after when Phil Lindley missed the target from six yards and then Tom Coyles was foiled by the feet of Rhodes.

After 65 minutes Ashley Scothern came on to make his debut for the home team replacing another debutant Rob Thomas. The ex Barnsley and Frickley man, who has been out of the game for a number of years, showed good skill and class on his first appearance.

Welfare keeper Watson made a great save on seventy minutes when he tipped a freekick over the bar and just after this welfare attacked down the right. A pass from Fish found Scothern but his shot was brilliantly palmed away by Rhodes.

In the last few minutes Dickinson forced Watson into a good low save and Andy Ring should have sealed it for the visitors but somehow missed from four yards.
