Kingsley Wetherald was sent off in controversial circumstances in Glasshoughton’s 2-1 defeat at Dronfield

Nine man Glasshoughton Welfare slipped to a last minute 2-1 defeat at Dronfield last night in a game that was marred by some controversial refereeing by Dominic Bell.

Welfare began well and opened the scoring in the eight minute when Josh Morley hit home a thirty yard direct free kick. A similar effort by the home team at the other end a minute later was easily gathered by Jordan Watson.

Welfare were going well and Regan Fish put a good ball through to Kingsley Wetherald who shot wide. Del Pollock then missed a good chance when he was through on his own with only keeper Steven Booth to beat

On 26 minutes Welfare’s Phil Lindley was harshly yellow carded for a 50/50 challenge and just after this the home side levelled the scores when Lewis Naylor was left unmarked and he headed a cross over Watson into the net.  Dronfield could have had a second minutes later when a corner ball was slammed just wide.

At the other end Booth just beat Pollock to a lovely pass through the middle from Morley. Just before half-time Watson saved well from Carlton Dickinson and Pollock just failed to get onto the end of a great pass across goal by Ryan Smith.

The second period opened with welfare on the attack and Wetherald hit shots against the host uprights twice in the space of twenty seconds.

Welfare suffered a blow on 63 minutes when defender Leon Cusworth was harshly red carded for a foul.

Just after this Watson made a great low save to keep out a fierce drive.

On 68 minutes came the most controversial point of the game after there appeared to be an off the ball incident involving Wetherald and a home player.

The assistant referee nearest the incident gave no indication to Mr Bell that he had seen anything and the referee spoke to Wetherald and appeared to give the home team a free-kick.

Members of the home dugout then seemed to harass the linesman who then raised his flag. After speaking to his assistant, the referee showed Wetherald a straight red card much to the amazement of the visiting supporters.

The official seemed to have lost control at this point and soon after he was ordering keeper Watson to hurry and retrieve the ball which had gone over the pitch side barriers.

Football did continue to be played and Welfare substitute Ashley Scothern was scythed down on the edge of the home area. with the defender only being shown a yellow card.

he home team got the winner in the 90th minute when Naylor was once again left unmarked and he shot low past Watson.
