Glasshoughton Welfare entertained a Leeds United Youth team in a friendly last night and the young Leeds lads showed plenty of spirit and class to beat Welfare 2-0 in front of a decent crowd.
In the opening minutes Regan Fish had the ball at his feet just outside the visitors penalty area and as a shooting opportunity loomed Fish decided to pass into the area and the ball was cleared.
Leeds took the lead on the fifth minute. A Phil Lindley pass was cut out and the ball found Lewis Knight just inside his own half. He strode forwards with the ball and he fired in a shot from 20 yards which evaded debutant goalkeeper Chris Myers into the corner of the net.
Welfare came back and a move down the left side saw the ball reach Luke Norbury who chipped just wide of the post. A ball was then driven across the Leeds area and Ashley Scothern headed just wide.
The home team had an escape on twenty five minutes but four minutes later 16 years old Knight scored his second when he ran stole the defence unchallenged an he slotted past Myers.
Just after this Myers made a good block from a Ronaldo Viera effort and Clark O’Dour showed great ball skill before curling an effort just wide.
Welfare hit back again And Scothern skimmed the bar with a shot. He then crossed a great ball only to Norbury head over. Norbury then had a goal disallowed for offside.
The pace of the game slowed in the second period although early on Tom Coyles did well to hook the ball away as the home goal came under pressure.Norbury once again headed an effort wide of goal.
Jordan Watson had replaced Myers in goal for Welfare and he comfortably dealt with further Leeds attacks.
Welfare came close to snatching a consolation goal near the end when a Tom Carr free-kick was blocked and the follow up Scothern was well kept out by the Leeds keeper Theo Richardson.
