Simon Houghton has returned to Pontefract Collieries to help put his former captain Nick Handley.

Houghton managed Pontefract between June 2008 and March 2011 and is credited with lifting the then-struggling Colls out of the doldrums. He then turned them into genuine Toolstation NCEL Division One promotion candidates.

His extremely controversial sacking when the club were fifth in the table was widely condemned at the time.

Houghton has been out of the game since being sacked by Shaw Lane Aquaforce in February 2014, apart from brief stint at Kinsley Boys.

He fills the void left by Nigel Danby and joins Craig Rouse on Handley’s coaching staff.

Handley said: “I was Simon’s captain at Ponte and I have seen how well he performs as a leader.

“I have a great deal of respect for him and since we were last together at Ponte he has had loads of experience in the NCEL Premier League with Glasshoughton, Athersley and Shaw Lane.

“He is an excellent addition to the team at the Club and I am really looking forward to working with him again.”
