Westella VIP avoided a potential banana skin by winning 6-1 at Humber Premier League leaders Wawne United in the East Riding Senior Cup second round tie.

The hosts sustained some very early pressure with VIP straight out of the blocks ensuring Wawne knew they where in for a game. A couple of early chances went a miss for Westella, but it was on the ten minute mark when a inch perfect cross from left back Mike Hewitt was met by Lee Gardiner who headed the ball in to the back of the net for 1-0.

On 25 minutes Westella got their second of the afternoon, a move that started with Hewitt at left back saw the ball worked from the left side to the right side of the pitch, Coverdale drove in to the Wawne box and set up Alex Wood for a easy finish at the back post.

Moments later Westella had a let off as a through ball was flicked on by a Wawne forward which saw his strike partner go through on goal one on one only to fire wide.

Wawne did pull on back on 35 minutes, a quick swift counter attack and a slow recovery throughout saw the hosts work the ball forward and with a slight deflection the Wawne number ten found the bottom left hand corner past the out-stretched Liam Taylor for 2-1.

Westella responded immediately only to see Wood fire wide in front of goal. Just before the half time whistle Westella VIP pinched the ball with Neil Shepperd releasing the lively Chris Short who squared the ball for the oncoming Andy Coverdale for 3-1.

The opening two minutes of the second half the hosts could of pulled the game level as they wasted two good chances, however it was to be Westella who got the next goal. Coverdale dispossessed a Wawne United player of the ball, a sliding pass through saw Wood hacked down for a penalty. Wood picked his spot and fired past the despairing goal keeper for 4-1.

Liam Taylor in the VIP goal had to make two routine saves as Wawne looked to get back in to the game along with the VIP back four cutting out any danger, most noticeable was a great sliding tackle on the Wawne number nine by James Williamson.

Joe McFadyen entered the pitch in replace of Coverdale and was straight in to the thick of it. McFadyen started off a swift move that saw Lewis Andrews, Rob Dodson and Wood all involved with Wood crossing for McFadyen who at the second attempt fired the ball home for 5-1.

As the hosts died out of the game with VIP showing their fitness, in the 88th minute Lewis Andrews delivered an inch perfect corner that Alex Wood volleyed in to the net for 6-1.

Westella VIP manager Leon Sewell: “I’m very happy with today’s performance and result. We worked smartly as a unit today and pressed Wawne when they had the ball putting them under pressure. Three of our goals where from working together and pinching the ball from them. The other three goals where of good quality leading up to the goals”.

“Credit to the Wawne United management and players, the way they committed men forward with pace was impressive but on a overall performance we where clinical in front of goal and we could of had a couple of more goals but the main thing is that we are in to the next round and have avoided a potential cup scalp”
