Non League legend Mark ‘Willy’ Wilson has set his sights on 1000 career appearances ahead of another milestone tomorrow.
Wilson is preparing to play his 950th game of an illustrious career in current club Retford United’s trip to Handsworth Parramore.
The 44-year-old has been turning out for Retford since the summer after deciding to prolong his playing career after a spell as player/assistant manager at Stocksbridge Park Steels.
Age has not stopped the midfielder and he believes he has lot of action ahead of him.
Wilson told Non League Yorkshire: “I still believe I have a lot to offer on the playing side, regardless of my age.
“I’ve kept myself fit which I have proved this season as I have been ever present for the last 20 matches since signing for Retford.
“I still want to play as high as I can and play the game in the same way as I did 20 odd years ago.
“You will never take the passion and commitment out of my game.
“The lads at Retford are young with not much experience of what Non League football entails I believe my experience and knowledge in the game will help Retford to grow as a club and as a team.
“I want the youngsters to grow as individuals and also for them to understand how to apply themselves so they can progress and become better players.
“I will carry on playing as long as I can until I realise its time to stop and making 1000 appearances is something I would like to achieve.”
Wilson recently celebrated the 18th anniversary of his career high – Emley’s legendary FA Cup visit to West Ham.
That is the pinnacle of a journey in Non League football that began with Frickley Athletic and has taken in spells with sides such as Bradford (Park Avenue), Harrogate Town, Ossett Town, Buxton, Grantham Town and Worksop Town.
Wilson added: “Although it is not Worksop we are playing, I think it is fitting that the 950th game is going to be at Sandy Lane.
“I had great times playing for Worksop and I have some great memories. I will always have an affinity with Worksop and Sandy Lane.”
After making his 900th career appearance in 2013, Wilson gave an interview remembering some of the memorable moments of his career.
