Glasshoughton Welfare’s joint managers Simon Houghton and Craig Wilkinson secured their first win after their side won 3-1 at Rossington Main.
First half goals from Josh Morley and Ashley Scothern set Welfare on their way to a precious victory. A Shaun Pendleton header pegged the visitors back, but a great second half effort from Luke Durham sealed the points.
Welfare introduced new signing Ryan Poskitt to their line up and big centre half Adam Walsh came into the team for his first league start under the new managers.
The opening minutes were fairly tame although Welfare nearly took the lead after thirteen minutes when a Scothern shot was somehow cleared off the line by a Rossington defender.
Welfare took the lead on fifteen minutes when the ball was played to Josh Morley in the home penalty area and he hammered the ball high into the net past Simon Dye.
After Jason Stokes hit the ball twice wide for the home side they equalised on twenty eight minutes. A high ball was hit into the area and Welfare goalkeeper Jordan Watson raced out to punch away but he was beaten to the ball by Shaun Pendleton who headed over him into the empty net.
Welfare regained the lead after thirty minutes when a cross from the left was mis-headed by a defender back into the penalty area and Ash Scothern headed over Dye.
A couple of minutes later it could have been three when Luke Durham broke down the left and his cross ball reached Scothern whose first time shot went inches wide of a post.
Just before the interval Welfare had a lucky escape when Jordan Hatton headed a cross home only to be flagged offside.
Welfare opened the second half well and increased their lead on 57 minutes. Scothern crossed from the right and the ball came to Durham on the left of the penalty area. He showed great class in bringing the ball back along the edge of the area before hitting a great shot past Dye.
Welfare then looked to increase their lead and Durham, Poskitt, and Del Pollock all saw efforts palmed away by keeper Dye.
Rossington, to their credit never gave up the fight and in the last few minutes the Welfare defence had to stand firm several times as the home side tried to pull a goal back. Watson made a good block with his feet in the last minute.
Glasshoughton Welfare joint manager Craig Wilkinson: “We had to work hard today for the three points, but in fairness the better team won.
“Our lads were strong today and the effort that they put in was fantastic. I hope that we can kick on from here and get the club back up the league where they belong.”
