Selby Town can at least grab an FA Cup place this season, at the very minimum, insists Dave Ricardo.
Selby are eleventh, seven points behind Yorkshire Amateur and Knaresborough Town with games in hand. The Robins have come a long way since this time last year when their form was erratic to say the least and their chances of finishing in the top ten were well and truly gone. Although Selby do occasionally succumb to the odd surprise defeat, Ricardo is pleased with the crop of players he has.
“We’re probably ten points below where I think we should be,” he said. “Results such as the defeat to Dronfield are just a kick in the teeth because it undoes a lot of the good work we have done.
“I think we have lost two in ten which any team in this Division can do. It shows that we are a good side, but we need to keep that consistency. We need to do what teams like Hemsworth do. When they play badly, they still can win. But, we have some exciting players in the squad and anyone who comes to watch us knows they have seen a good game. You can pull your hair out sometimes, but there is entertainment.
“There is still plenty to play for this season as we’re still in the League Cup and we can reach the top ten. The aim was top six at the start of the season, I know it is a long shot, but if the players to do themselves justice then there is no reason why we can’t get near there.”
An indictor of how Selby will finish the season could be given at league leaders Hemsworth Miners Welfare tomorrow. Anything is possible after the unbelievable 5-4 victory at Penistone Church.
“It could be a ten-all thriller, but I’ll take a 1-0 scrappy win,” he added. “Hemsworth are a good side, full of attacking players so it could make to be an entertaining game.”
