Nothing lucky about late wins – Godber

Mick Godber insists that there is nothing “lucky” about Handsworth Parramore’s recent late victories.

Just like title rivals Tadcaster Albion, Parramore have won their two matches by scoring the winner in the closing stages.

Godber told Non League Yorkshire: “They always say that the top sides get all the luck, but is it lucky that Tadcaster have also won a couple of games late-on recently?

“That’s not lucky, it is because they’re a good side. To win a league you’re not going to win 5-0 every week. You need to win 1-0 ten times during a season and if you score near the end it is a better time to score.”

Kieran Wells is back for Parramore’s clash with Thackley at Sandy Lane tomorrow, providing Godber and assistant Mark Ward with plenty of dilemmas over who will lead their attack.

Star signing Anthony Wilson, recruited from Gainsborough Trinity, made his debut in the win over Maltby Main and Godber was pleased with what he saw.

“I thought he did well. You could see that he hadn’t played for a few months, but you could see that he wanted to be here for the right reasons,” he said.

“If he stays fit we have one hell of a player. We have now Jon Froggatt, Nathan Joynes, Wilson, Wells, Rippon so we have a decent squad and it is about keeping them happy.”

Godber has been in charge of Handsworth for over a month since Peter Dufffield made his exit. Fourth-placed Parramore have yet to lose under his guidance.

The former Alfreton Town striker combines with his Parramore duties with running his son’s Dinnington Town under 10s team, which he has done for four years. Along with a day job, it is a heavy workload, but Godber is relishing his role at Parramore and is trying to apply the same principles that he uses to run his junior team.

“There hasn’t been problem and I’ve enjoyed it,” Godber said. “It is not about me, the credit goes to the lads. The lads have took to how myself and Mark Ward want to do it. There has been a slight changes, but not much and they’ve won five games and drawn one so credit goes to them.

“I enjoy running both my teams. We train Friday nights with them. Thursday night is training with the Handsworth lads and Tuesday is training as well if we’re not playing. I think there is five days of football and two days of cricket, but it is better than being at home with the Mrs watching the tele.

“I don’t have to do too much planning with the under 10s team because it is about them running around with a smile on their faces. That’s how we try to be here now. We’re saying ‘let’s enjoy ourselves and see where we go’.

“At the end of the day we work all week and when we get here we say ‘let’s try and it enjoy’.”
