Wayne Benn wants champions-elect Hemsworth Miners Welfare to cement their place in the history books by “sprinting” to the title.

Only five more wins are currently needed to secure the championship and the historic promotion to the Premier Division. They may not require as many if the teams around them drop points in the next few matches. Hemsworth’s lead at the top can be extended to 14 points if they win at manager-less Worsbrough Bridge tonight.

“We’re in a dream position to be 11 points clear with a game in hand and it is remarkable,” Benn told Non League Yorkshire.

“What I would like to say is that we finished so close last year, three points short of second place. To bounce back and go again is unbelievable and I have to give my lads all the credit in the world.

“We need to get over the line first before we can celebrate and there is still some hard work ahead of us. Although I’m not one for stats and records, but I want us to get over 100 points if we can and go unbeaten until the end of the season.

“I want to finish with only two defeats all season because I want the lads to get the recognition and the plaudits they deserve. It has already been an unbelievable season. It will be an unbelievable season no matter how we finish the season off. I’ve asked them (the players) to sprint to the line, not limp to the line.”

The visit to Worsbrough is the first of an exciting few days for Hemsworth. Saturday sees them head to the Welfare Ground for the humdinger with adversaries AFC Emley.

Some would say crisis club Worsbrough will provide easy meat for Hemsworth, but Benn said: “We don’t expect to go and turn up and just win.

“We are going to encounter a difficult pitch. They have strengthened their side up so we expect another difficult game and we are going to have apply ourselves.

“We need to adapt to the conditions and play our way. Hopefully that will be good enough on the night. Looking further ahead we have a big game against Emley on Saturday.

“Those types of games really take care of themselves. But we can’t forget about the Worsbroughs and other teams. I won’t let the players’ minds drift to other games.”
