Paul Quinn has told his Brighouse Town players that they’re playing for their futures at the club.
Pragmatic Quinn’s plans for next season are underway and he is prepared to axe anyone who he feels is pulling their weight. Quinn has accelerated his preparations for the 2016-17 campaign because of the five-match losing run which was halted with the victory over Kendal Town on Monday night.
“We needed a win (on Monday night) and I think it is the leanest period since I have been a manager, that’s for sure,” Quinn told Non League Yorkshire.
“It has been tough-going over the last five games. We were pushing towards the top end of the table, but now we’re out of play-offs contention it has given us the opportunity to blood some of the young lads and give them some experience.
“We’re certainly casting our eye on what we can do now towards next season to push us on. I don’t want to settle for mediocrity. I want to be pushing the club forward.
“The first objective is get more points than last season, but I can tell you now that we’re already looking at how to strengthen us. I think we should be further on than where we are.
“I have been disappointed with recent performances and ultimately we will have to make changes. I think we have to freshen up and get some personnel in.
“The message to the current players is that they have to be showing us between now and the end of the season that they want to be part of next season.
“There are places to be played for and decisions to be made because when you bring players in, you have to free up places by getting players out.
“We told them this before the Droylsden game, it is no secret. People from the outside may think Brighouse finishing in mid-table is okay, but certainly from the management point of view, we want a little bit more than that.
“We know our resources and know we have to box-clever in terms of financing, but I still think this club is capable of pushing on at this level.”
